Smell gas? Do this first
Smell gas? Leave now.
- Get everyone out of the house right away. Don’t look for the leak.
- Don’t flip light switches on or off, use a phone, garage door opener, doorbell or flashlight inside, light anything, or start or stop a car nearby.
- Don’t try to shut off the gas valve yourself.
- Once you’re outside and a safe distance away, call 911 and Atmos Energy’s 24-hour emergency line, 866-322-8667.
- After Atmos or the fire department says it’s safe, call Everflow at (469) 532-0101 for leak repair, the pressure test and relight.

After it’s safe: gas line repair
Once Atmos or the fire department clears the house, the problem is usually on the customer side of the meter — your house piping. That’s our work.
- Find the leak — we test house piping, fittings, risers, shutoff valves, and appliance connectors with a gas detector and leak solution, not guesswork.
- Repair it right — replace the failed fitting, section of pipe, valve, or connector with code-approved materials (black iron, CSST, or approved flex as the job calls for).
- Pressure test — the line is tested and has to hold before gas service goes back on.
- Relight — once the meter is back on, we relight and check the furnace, water heater, range, and any other gas appliances.
Signs of a gas line problem
- Rotten-egg / sulfur smell inside, near an appliance, or by the meter
- Hissing or whistling near a gas line, valve, or appliance
- A dead or brown patch of grass over a buried gas line
- A pilot that won’t stay lit, or a yellow, lazy burner flame instead of a crisp blue one
- Atmos red-tagged an appliance or locked the meter after a service check
If you smell gas right now, stop reading and follow the steps above — get out first, then call.
Pressure testing & getting the gas back on
After any repair, the gas piping is pressurized and watched on a gauge. If the needle holds, the system is tight. If it drops, there’s still a leak and we keep working before anything gets relit.
Once the line passes, we coordinate with Atmos on turning the meter back on when needed, then relight the furnace, water heater and range and check that each burner lights and runs right.
No heat after the gas was shut off, or the furnace won’t relight cleanly? That’s a furnace repair call — we handle both sides, plumbing and HVAC.
New gas lines & appliance hookups
Not every gas call is a leak. We also run new lines and hook up appliances:
- Furnace — new or replacement furnace gas connection
- Water heater — tank swaps, and tankless conversions, which usually need a larger gas line than the old tank
- Range / cooktop and gas dryer hookups
- Outdoor grill, fire pit, or outdoor kitchen lines
- Flex connector replacement — old or kinked appliance connectors swapped for new, properly sized ones
Every new line gets the same pressure test before it goes into service.
Permits & inspection
We pull permits and handle inspections wherever the city requires them for gas work, so the job is on record and done to code. Wylie, for example, requires a building permit for gas line repairs, installs, and replacements.
